Glaciers, oceans, and polar regions are deeply interconnected, and changes in one part of the system quickly affect others. What may appear as local or isolated changes are in fact part of a much larger, system-wide transformation.\nGlaciers play a key role in global water systems, feeding rivers that supply water to around two billion people. As glaciers retreat, new river systems are forming. By the end of the century, this could mean between 330,000 and 480,000 kilometers of new streams, roughly 48 times the length of the Nile. This is not simply more water flowing, but a fundamental shift in how water moves through landscapes, with direct implications for long-term water security in many regions. These changes will also affect nutrient cycles, ecosystems, and biodiversity, with impacts unfolding at a pace that many ecosystems may struggle to adapt to.\nAt the same time, the Arctic Ocean is undergoing a major transformation. As more freshwater enters from melting ice, measurements show that salinity levels have already decreased compared to historical levels. This matters because salinity helps drive ocean circulation, including systems that influence climate well beyond the Arctic region. Past observations have shown how quickly these dynamics can change. Today, circulation patterns are still largely stable, but there is growing concern that they are approaching thresholds where change could accelerate. It was also noted that while scientists are uncertain about the exact likelihood of these shifts, there is broad agreement that if they occur, they could lead to large-scale system disruptions.\nLooking at the ocean more broadly, it is absorbing most of the excess heat from greenhouse gas emissions, along with a significant share of carbon dioxide, far more than many people are aware of. This buffering role is essential, but it is putting increasing pressure on marine systems. Marine heatwaves are becoming more frequent, longer, and more intense, with the ability to push ecosystems beyond their limits. At the same time, the seabed plays a critical but often overlooked role in storing carbon over long periods. Industrial activities such as bottom trawling are not only reducing this capacity but also releasing stored carbon. Protecting these systems could significantly strengthen natural carbon sequestration.\nThe Gap Between Knowledge and Action\nAcross all of these topics, one point came up repeatedly. We already know a lot. In many cases, we know more than we are currently able to translate into action. This gap between knowledge and implementation was one of the defining themes of the session.\nThis led to a discussion around whether more data is still needed, especially considering that oceans cover around 70% of the Earth, yet remain underrepresented in climate research and observation. Some participants argued that gaps in data, particularly in ocean systems, limit our ability to act with confidence.
