The ocean absorbs around 90% of the excess heat generated by human-driven climate change and around a quarter of global carbon dioxide emissions, helping to regulate the planet's climate while supporting marine ecosystems that sustain life on Earth.\n\nRockström argues that the ocean cannot be viewed in isolation. It is deeply connected to glaciers, polar ice sheets, biodiversity and the wider climate system, meaning that damage in one part of the Earth system can trigger cascading impacts elsewhere. Equally, restoring these interconnected systems can generate benefits that extend far beyond a single ecosystem.\n\nHe also discusses emerging research on the ocean planetary boundary, highlighting growing concerns around ocean warming, declining oxygen levels, ocean acidification and the increasing risk of disruption to the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). Understanding these interconnected risks, he argues, is essential if we are to become better stewards of the ocean and build a more resilient future.\n\nJohan Rockström, Director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) and Professor in Earth System Science, spoke recently at the Villars Ocean Forum.
