'When there is the right information on the table, when there is willingness of the different sectors, and when there is a clear target, then it is easier to see people around the table to find solutions'
How can we take a systemic approach to prioritising nature in policy, business, and society? Grethel Aguilar, Director General of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), argues that true progress comes when the right information, strong cross-sector collaboration, and clear targets align to drive meaningful action.
As the global authority on the status of the natural world, IUCN represents more than 1,400 member organisations, spanning governments and civil society worldwide. This unique network enables the organisation to break down silos, build consensus, and advance solutions that safeguard biodiversity at scale.
Aguilar also emphasises the role of the private sector in conservation - from financing to policy influence - underscoring that nature-positive action must be embedded across economic systems to succeed. By integrating science, governance, and business, systemic approaches can ensure that nature is not just protected but prioritised as an essential foundation for life on Earth.
